Concrete is a comic book series created and written by Paul Chadwick and published by Dark Horse Comics. His first appearance is Dark Horse Presents #1 (July, 1986). The eponymous central character is a normal man whose brain was transplanted into a large, stone body by aliens, and who lives an extraordinary life on Earth following his escape.
The Concrete series focuses on realism. Apart from the aliens (which disappear in the origin issue and are never heard from again) and Concrete's own high-tech artificial body (which includes superhuman sight), there are no supernatural or science-fiction elements to any stories.

Marvel Fanfare served as an anthology to give new writers and artists a place to show their stuff. It also published material that regulars produced but for which Marvel had no place in the regular publication schedule. Editor Al Milgrom in May 2005 on Marvel Fanfare: "It was intended that [Marvel Fanfare] would appeal especially to the fans. [I] tried to get the best possible stuff (as you say--by either established pros or talented newcomers). At least part of the purpose was to use better paper, more elaborate, detailed coloring and, by charging a higher cover price, to eliminate all those unsightly ads. The creators were paid a bonus 50% rate, too. I was sometimes 'accused' of just using up inventory material--as if that was necessarily a bad thing. I did use some inventory stuff--if I thought it was of high enough quality. As with any grand vision, the results sometimes fell short of the goal. But hey, I tried. It was sometimes difficult to keep on top of the book, since I went off staff after awhile, and had to try to coordinate its publication while working at home and juggling a full-time freelance career. What finally killed it was the advent of incentive payments to freelancers--top creators could make far more than the rate-and-a-half Fanfare paid if they worked on many of the better selling regular titles. That and my workload and family obligations made it tough to keep the book going. And sales had begun to drop as well."

Morrison developed several long-running plots, introducing mysteries, some of which were not explained until a year or two later. The title featured the protagonist both in and — increasingly — out of costume. Morrison made the title character an everyman figure living in a universe populated by superheroes, aliens, and fantastic technology. Buddy's wife Ellen, his son Cliff (9 years old at the beginning of the series), and his daughter Maxine (5 years old) featured prominently in most storylines, and his relationship with them, as husband, father, and provider, was an ongoing theme.
The series championed vegetarianism and animal rights, causes Morrison himself supported. In one issue, Buddy helps a band of self-confessed eco-terrorists save a pod of dolphins. Enraged at a fisherman's brutality, Buddy drops him into the ocean, intending for him to drown. Ironically, the man is saved by a dolphin.
Buddy fought several menaces, such as ancient, murderous spirit that was hunting him; brutal, murderous alien Thanagarian warriors; and even the easily-defeated red robots of an elderly villain who was tired of life. The series made deep, sometimes esoteric, reference to the entire DC canon, including B'wana Beast, Mirror Master, and Arkham Asylum.

It replaced Marvel Team-Up as the third major Spider-Man title of the time. Its first issue featured the return of Spider-Man's alien black costume, which attempted to rebond with Peter Parker. Swamp Thing, a fictional character, is a plant elemental in the DC Comics Universe originally created by Len Wein and Berni Wrightson. He first appeared in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971) in a stand-alone horror story set in the early 20th century (plotted by Wein and drawn by Wrightson). The Swamp Thing then returned in his own series, set in the contemporary world and in the general DC continuity. The character is a humanoid mass of vegetable matter who fights to protect his swamp home, the environment in general, and humanity from various supernatural or terrorist threats.
As Swamp Thing was heading for cancellation due to low sales, DC editorial agreed to give Alan Moore (at the time a relatively unknown writer whose previous work included several stories for 2000 AD, Warrior and Marvel UK) free rein to revamp the title and the character as he saw fit. Moore reconfigured Swamp Thing's origin to make him a true monster as opposed to a human transformed into a monster. In his first issue, he swept aside the supporting cast Pasko had introduced in his year-and-a-half run as writer, and brought the Sunderland Corporation (a villainous group out to gain the secrets of Alec Holland's research) to the forefront, as they hunted Swamp Thing and "killed" him in a hail of bullets.
